Electric Motor and Electrical Engineering company JJ Loughran is putting plans in place to create 37 new jobs in Cookstown as part of a £2.2m investment supported by Invest Northern Ireland.

The county Tyrone business, which has recruited nine of these positions already, is investing in new equipment, marketing and additional skilled personnel to boost its competitiveness in growing industry sectors such as agri-food, renewable and pharmaceuticals.

Speaking following a visit to the company’s premises, Brian Dolaghan, Invest NI’s Executive Director of Business and Sector Development, said: “This significant investment will enable JJ Loughran to maximise its growth potential. The company will target new industry sectors and market regions across Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. Invest NI’s support has encouraged the business to scale up its offering and implement an aggressive growth strategy.”

JJ Loughran is one of UK and Ireland’s largest and most diverse Electrical and Mechanical engineering companies; offering a synergy of manufacturing, product supply, installation, maintenance and repair services, both in house and on site.

“The majority of the remaining 28 jobs to be created over the next three years will pay salaries above the private sector median, generating £670,000 annually in additional salaries in the local economy. This is good news for the Mid Ulster region and a welcome development for Northern Ireland’s engineering sector,” added Brian.

Invest NI has offered JJ Loughran £281,090 towards its recruitment, market development and capital investment costs.

Kevin Loughran, Joint Managing Director at JJ Loughran, said: “We want to continue to grow our market share in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. We will be introducing innovative production and repair methods as part of efforts to boost our competitiveness and add value to our service offering.

“Recruitment for the 28 positions will begin shortly and will give us the resources to meet the projected growth in new business. Job opportunities will be wide ranging to include electrical and mechanical engineers, sales support roles as well as sales engineers and project engineers.

“Working with Invest NI has enabled us to implement a strategic approach to business growth. Its support with this investment will ensure we can maximise the opportunities we have identified, gaining new business, and raising JJ Loughran’s profile in external markets.”

The company operates in a number of industry sectors including water and sewage utilities, quarrying, manufacturing, chemical, agriculture, food processing, by-product rendering and power generation.

JJ Loughran has invested in a defibrillator with the appropriate training at our main office in Cookstown.  This piece of life-saving equipment can be used for staff, customers and will be publically-accessible to the local community in times of emergency. We informed local households that this medical equipment is available for their use, should the need arise.

The chances of surviving a heart attack decrease by 10% for every minute that passes without treatment.  Having the early use of a defibrillator and immediate CPR can dramatically improve a patient’s chances of survival when they go into cardiac arrest.

The defibrillator is state of the art and easy to use with a calm clear voice talking you through the rescue process. JJ Loughran will ensure the defibrillator is properly maintained and kept certified ready for use.

The defibrillator will be located just inside the front door of the building at the following address:
155 Drum Rd, Cookstown, Co Tyrone, BT80 9DW

At JJ Loughran MAC (Motovario Assembly Centre) we have been custom building Motovario Worm Geared and Bevel Helical geared motors up to 130mm hollow bore since 2013. We build our gearboxes to the same standard as the main Motovario factory in Italy and we offer the full range of ratios available. All of our gearboxes come with two years manufacturer’s warranty as standard. We have an average build time of 40 minutes per gearbox so items can be shipped out in the tightest of timescale, offering same-day on-site delivery. Another key benefit of Motovario is that its footprint allows 'drop in' replacement of other manufacturers including SEW, Bonfiglioli, Rossi, Nord and Flender

JJ Loughran has upgraded their current laser alignment system to the new SKF TKSA 41 shaft alignment tool. This is an advanced laser alignment solution for achieving extremely accurate shaft alignments. This system has two wireless measurement units, large sized detectors and powerful lasers; the instrument performs precise measurements in even the most challenging conditions.

The Main advantages of the SKF TKSA 41 are as follows:-

• Wireless communication which improves instrument handling and allows alignments of difficult to reach applications from a safe position.

• Free measurement allows alignment measurements to start at any angle and finish with an angular sweep of up to 90°.

• Automatic measurement enables hands-free measurements by detecting the head position and taking a measurement when the heads are rotated into the correct position.

• Automatic reports are generated after each alignment. The reports can be customised, producing notes and pictures from the built-in camera for the most comprehensive overview. All reports can be exported as pdf files.

• Live view supports intuitive measurements and facilitates horizontal and vertical alignments.

• Machine library gives an overview of all machines and alignment reports. QR codes can be used to further simplify machine identification and

Why Laser align?
Shaft alignment is recommended for almost every industry, as it enables machine uptime to be significantly improved and maintenance costs to be reduced.

Up to 50% of the damage to rotating machinery can be directly related to misalignment: -

Misalignment can lead to

• Premature bearing, seal, coupling and shaft failures
• Looseness of foundation bolts and base plates
• High Vibration and temperature
• Higher power consumption
• High maintenance costs

Malawi is among the world's least-developed countries. The economy is heavily based in agriculture, with a largely rural population.
Bally-Kajoni Orphan Care Program operates in northern Malawi looking after over 400 local children. It is run and managed by Chief Allen Kambundi Msiska who is tireless in his efforts to provide the best quality of life for his people and especially the orphan children.

He is assisted by a group of people from Northern Ireland who have been able to help them with clothing, toys, hospital beds, a tractor and a water turbine. JJ Loughran is delighted to be able to help in a small way by donating an Amco-Marelli generator & electrical switchgear which when joined with the water turbine will replace a diesel generator and provide electricity for their community.

Some of the power that will be generated will be used to grind maize to feed the orphans. This mill is also an important source of economic independence as it’s spare capacity is used by the local community. This is a big forward step in achieving their goal of being a sustainable community who are concerned about local conservation.

Supporting such economic development which helps vulnerable groups in the community such as the orphans and poor people is essential for all people to progress sustainably and enjoy their place in this beautiful world.

JJ Loughran have a long standing partnership with VACON drives, and are pleased to inform our valued customers that we will be joining forces with another heavy-weight in the Variable Speed Drive Industry, DANFOSS.

Joining forces also means that the new business will be able to invest further in both R&D and in the sales force, which is a key success factor in our business,” says Vesa Laisi, President and CEO of Vacon.
The two companies are in the process of combining to become DANFOSS DRIVES and will offer a world leading product portfolio. A dedicated drives focus unites the two companies and distinguishes it from its competitors.

JJ Loughran engineers recently completed a 2 – day course aimed at ensuring their engineers are expertly trained and equipped to carry out work safety inside wind turbines. The training covered everything from health and safety regulations to the rescue of co-workers in distress. JJ Loughran recognises the growing importance of the wind turbine sector in the local economy and we wanted to ensure that our engineers have the best and most up to date training available.
At present, our own engineers when working in conjunction with wind turbine installers and owners, can carry out a number of checks inside a turbine including electric system checks, testing and inspection of generators, electric drive motors and gearboxes. If we find faults on site we can either review the feasibility of carrying out the repairs locally or removing equipment to be fully overhauled at our engineering workshop. See recent overhaul of Vestas wind turbine.
ABB Generator Division is a major supplier to wind turbine sector. As JJ Loughran is an approved ABB Authorised Value provider we can not only overhaul and repair these machines, but also quote for new ABB generators and smaller ABB electric motors used in hydraulic, cooling and drive systems.
The aforementioned wind turbine training was carried out by ‘ARCH Training’ at their state of the art facility in Lisnaskea, Enniskillen.
The training has been assessed and certified as meeting the requirement of RUK AND GWO criteria for training providers for both RENableUK Working at height & Rescue – Wind Turbine Standard and GWO BST Working at Height Standard.
